How Do I Know If My Dryer Vent Is Clogged?

By | Tagged with: Tags: , , , | Comments Off on How Do I Know If My Dryer Vent Is Clogged?

Did you know that the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) named clothes dryers as the cause of 15,520 residential fires between 2006 and 2010? The main reason for these fires had to do with dirty dryer vents. Your clothes dryer produces lint, which is so flammable that the Boy Scouts of America suggest using it to start campfires. Lint can accumulate in your dryer vent and create blockages, which can lead to an accidental fire. But, how do you know if your dryer vent is clogged? Magic Sweep would like to share with you some of the signs of which you should be aware. We are proud to offer professional dryer vent cleaning services and recommend that you contact us whenever you notice any of the following signs.

Your clothes are not completely dry after one drying cycle.

If you are having to run your dryer for at least two cycles to fully dry a load of clothes, your dryer vent is most likely clogged. The purpose of your dryer vent is to draw out the moist air from your dryer to allow more hot air to be pulled in to complete the drying process. If your vent is clogged, that moist air is trapped inside your dryer, which makes it difficult for clothes to dry.

Your dryer is hot to the touch.

A clogged dryer vent causes your dryer to overheat and can make your dryer hot to the touch. Not only does overheating reduce the life of your dryer, but it also can lead to an accidental fire. Remember that lint is very flammable, and extremely high temperatures can ignite any lint accumulations in the vent.

You can see lint coming from the outside vent opening.

Take a look at the vent opening on the outside of your home. If you can see lint gathered around this opening, this is another sign of a clogged dryer vent.

You smell something burning when your dryer is being used.

This burning smell is probably lint burning inside the dryer vent. This could lead to a very dangerous situation. You should immediately turn off your dryer and contact Magic Sweep to schedule a professional dryer vent cleaning.

You have never had your dryer vent professionally cleaned.
