How HeatShield Works

Does your chimney liner need some work? A chimney with a damaged or missing liner will not work properly and will be unsafe. This is because the liner is a necessary barrier that offers protection to the masonry, to the home, and to the fire. It’s like skin, covering a large space and doing an important job. The liner keeps the heat, gas, and corrosive byproducts of the fire in the chimney, prevents heat from moving through the masonry and damaging important building components of the home, and protects the masonry from corrosive chemicals from the fire. When the liner becomes worn and damaged over time and use, it should be repaired quickly and appropriate for the type of fire you use.

Major and Minor Liner Repairs
Whether your liner needs minor or major repairs, we can fix it quickly using HeatShield. This product is appropriate for joint repair, resurfacing, and complete relining. It is as durable and long-lasting as a stainless steel liner, appropriate for all fuel types, and cheaper. HeatShield combines the strength of a high fired ceramic with the heat resistance of high-temperature refractory cement, to create HeatShield Cerfractory technology. This product comes in powder form, so a HeatShield installer can mix and use it on site, cutting down on waste and cost.

HeatShield Installation
When you hire Magic Sweep for your HeatShield installation, we’ll begin by installing a custom foam applicator blade in your flue, attached to a winch system to complete the necessary repair. Following installation, the work is checked with a video recording system.

Joint Repair – For joint repairs and gaps, we place the foam applicator blade just below the affected portion of the flue and fill it with the HeatShield product. Using the winch, the applicator is pulled upward and deposits the product into the spaces, smoothing it over the flue liner.

Resurfacing – When the damage is more extensive, the liner will need a complete resurfacing. The foam applicator blade is placed at the bottom of the flue, and the product is moved upward, applying the product to the entire surface. This is after a “tie coat” is applied first to clean and prime the existing surface.

CeCure Sleeve Relining – When the entire flue needs to be relined, we use the CeCure Sleeve, a thin profile, ceramic insulation, reinforced with stainless steel fabric. This sleeve is sandwiched between two coats of HeatShield which is completely pressed into the flue using the foam applicator blade. Once completely relined, the flue is appropriate for all fuel types and should last 80+ years.

HeatShield Protects Your Chimney From Extreme Heat

All of the parts of your chimney system work together for one thing–to protect your home from fire and exposure to harmful gases. The chimney is made up of many parts that work together to keep it working properly year after year. One of the most important and somewhat overlooked parts of the system is the chimney liner, sometimes called the flue liner because it literally lines the flue. Replacing or repairing the liner can be expensive and time-consuming, but not when you use HeatShield. It protects your chimney from extreme heat, keeps the fire in its place, and is safe HeatShield Protects Your Chimney - Chesapeake VA - Magic Sweepfor use with all fuel types.

HeatShield Cerfractory Technology

This “cerfractory” technology was developed in Europe over 20 years ago and combines the strength of hybrid ceramic and the heat resistance of refractory cement. It comes to the chimney company as a dry powder, so we only mix what amount is necessary so we don’t waste any HeatShield and our customers don’t waste money. This product has been tested for heat resistance and strength, and is listed to UL 1777 standards for chimney liner systems in residential homes. We can use HeatShield to restore or line your chimney system this summer!

Chimney Cleaning with HeatShield

HeatShield Poultice Creosote Remover (PCR) [CeCure® Sleeve] is applied to the flue walls by using a custom-made foam applicator blade that is attached to a pulley at the top of the flue. As the blade is pulled upward, the HeatShield Poultice Creosote Remover is applied to the walls where it dissolves and absorbs creosote (even 3rd degree glazed creosote). Once it dries, it falls off the walls, leaving a clean surface. Once the flue is clean, HeatShield Cerfractory Flue Sealantcan be applied for heat protection.

Repairing the Liner with HeatShield

Joint Repair – A custom foam applicator is placed below the affected areas of the flue and attached to a pulley at the top. HeatShield Cerfractory Flue Sealant is placed in the applicator and it is pulled upward, depositing the sealant into voids and cracks. The applicator blade smooths the sealant as it is pulled upward.
Resurfacing – The custom foam applicator is placed all the way at the bottom of the flue, attached to the pulley at the top. First, a tie coat is applied to the flue to clean it, and then HeatShield Cerfractory Flue Sealant is applied to the entire flue at ¼ inch thickness as the applicator is pulled upward again. The job is double-checked with a video scan.
CeCure® Relining – Magic Sweep can reline the chimney system completely using CeCure® Sleeve Relining System. First, the HeatShield Cerfractory Flue Sealant is applied to the flue with a drying accelerator added. Next, a custom fitted CeCure® Sleeve is attached to the top, where it is positioned in place as the applicator blade is sent down again. Finally, another layer is applied over the CeCure® Sleeve to finish the job. The job is verified using a video scan. The CeCure® Sleeve Relining System is safe for use with all fuel types, and the CeCure® Sleeve itself is a high-density, low-profile ceramic insulation sleeve reinforced with stainless steel fabric.

What is HeatShield technology and How Does it Work?

HeatShield® is a chimney liner repair system that restores the chimney to its full safety and function in one easy process. It has been intensively tested and is considered a “Super Duty” refractory mortar. It is affordable and long-lasting. So, what is it?

HeatShield® Cerfractory® Technology

The HeatShield® difference is that it combines the strength of ceramic and the heat resistance of refractory cement to create the cerfractory technology that can repair your joints, resurface your chimney, and assist in lining. When an installer is trained and certified to apply HeatShield® in the field, he’ll do so by simply mixing water with the powder. This allows for less waste and keeps costs low. At Magic Sweep, we trust HeatShield®, and we’re proud to offer HeatShield® repairs and relining with the same great service and professionalism we’ve offered for years here in Chesapeake.

HeatShield® Joint Repair System

When joints become damaged, they not only create gaps, but it also create rough areas that disrupt the flow of air, which brings down the efficiency of the chimney. When this happens, the gaps commonly get bigger and worsen until a bigger problem arises in the flue. Using HeatShield® Cerfractory Technology, we can efficiently fill these gaps using a foam applicator blade, which custom fits your flue. After application, we check the system using video technology to ensure it works properly.

HeatShield® Resurfacing System

Over time, even expensive and properly-installed liners can become damaged. Cracks, gaps, and spalling masonry can become a problem–especially when a chimney is neglected and necessary maintenance appointments are forgotten. We can resurface the entire flue by using HeatShield® Cerfractory Technology. First, the foam applicator is made and placed at the bottom of the flue. It is then hoisted up as it applies a “tie coat” material to the walls. Once this coat dries, we apply HeatShield® in the same manner. This process is repeated once more, and then the job is completed with a video scan.

HeatShield® Cecure® Sleeve Relining System

Both resurfacing and relining work as a liner for your flue, and it’s safe for all fuel-types and long lasting, while also properly-sized–just as if you had a new liner. However, with the HeatShield® Cecure® Sleeve Relining System, nothing has to be removed from the flue. This is less disruption to the home as the HeatShield® material goes directly over the damaged portions. First, HeatShield® Cerfractory® Flue Sealant is applied using the custom foam applicator. Then, a CeCure® Sleeve made of high-density, low profile, ceramic insulation, reinforced with stainless steel fabric is placed inside the flue and pressed firmly into place using the foam applicator. The job is finished when another coat of HeatShield® Cerfractory® Flue Sealant is applied over the sleeve. This work is also checked using a video scanning system so that you have the verification of its safety and installation.
